Interesting thoughts, especially how Dean is different now than in the episode with the Djinn. I was thinking something similar when Dean said he didn't care that these people would die should he be able to change the past.
I also like the theory about why Sam wasn't send back as well. It makes sense that Castiel wanted to keep him away from Azazel. A meeting between them would have been interesting, but could have ended pretty badly for Sam.
I don't think there will be more guilt for Dean over this. The YED would have chosen Mary either way. If he hadn't, there would have never been a reason for Dean to go back to the past. So even without Dean, Mary would have met Azazel eventually.

I agree...interesting thoughts. I was worried that this episode would mean more guilt for Dean, but I think what Castiel says to him at the end (about not being able to change destiny) took care of that. I also agree that Dean is not scared of Sam, he is scared for him. I've never thought Dean was scared of him (even though I think Sam may have thought/think that). I think that's why he made him promise not to go that route before the hellhounds came--he was worried about what it would do to Sam. I can easily see miscommunication among these two about this, which will add to the angst.

I still can't say it's Dean's fault, especially since Castiel basically said it would have happened anyways--maybe a week later, or a year later, but I think it still would have happened.

Well, we know that Mary and her family were hunters. The YED did make a visit to one of Mary's friends. That friend could have said something to Mary, which would make her hunter's instincts (not to mention her father's) go off and set them on the trail of the YED. Or, the YED could have come across her just by being in the same town and gone after them just because they are hunters. I think there's lots of ways that it could have happened--it was just meant to be.

It DID happen then and there. It was April 30th 1973 when Dean landed in the past. On May 2nd 1983 Sam was born. Ten years after Mary's deal.
Maybe she was at her friend's anyway, maybe there was some hunter there anyway, and he somehow had a clue about where YED would strike next, and Dean simply "posessed" him to see the events as they were unfolding. Time-travel paradoxes can give you a headache, can't they?

Hmmm.... Interesting. Dean had to die at the moment his year was up, but YED's ten years is more flexible? (Goes back to that whole confusing aspect of his need to kiss her to seal it... Gross)
Mary made her deal in spring of '73 but YED didn't come until Fall of '73... and WHY did the kids have to be 6 months old?
MAYBE that's another reason why Mary had relaxed her guard? She'd expected him to show up in the spring and when he didn't, she relaxed???

Ooh, good question. I wonder if Kripke will ever address it?

That's a good explanation, especially given that she was a hunter, you'd have thought she would have been prepared, so when he didn't show, she thought it was over (maybe she thought someone had killed the YED?), so she wasn't thinking about Dean's warning because she was so relieved that the YED didn't show up in May.
