Hmm, I watched it three times now and I keep hearing Sam. But it does sound mumbled, so it could very well be Jared and I just missed it.
Funny how no one noticed that. And from all the takes they must have taken from that scene, that one was the one that made it on the show *g*
ETA: As I'm rewatching this, I was wondering ... what happened to the axe? In "Home", Dean gets an axe to get through the door and inside the house. It was basically the same situation here ... spirit keeps the door closed and Sam inside ... only this time Dean doesn't even think about getting the axe. He doesn't even try. This is just minor and I know they needed it for the plot, but still ... they wouldn't just leave the axe at the motel, would they?

Re: axe, I wish there were no supernatural thingies on this show, dang. I'm tempted to skip them, but don't afraid that there might be some interesting bit of dialog or something. But I do skip through the opening sequence with "the ghost of the day". Now you know.
Re: Jared or Sam. I deleted the episode already! And I'm curious... Ah, whatever...
Great episode character-wise. This time some explanation of Sam's attitude, but we were aware of his relationship issues already. But it was charming how Dean wanted Sam to open up.

Dean is always looking out for Sam's love life
True...and I think Sam would rather Dean not look out for his (Sam's) love life. I do like how Dean got, I don't know what the word is, almost gentle with him, asking him if Jess would want him to be happy. It's one of the few times I can think of off the top of my head where they talk about her.

*evil grin* I always saw it as Dean trying to make his brother into a slut like himself! *wicked laugh* Older siblings are always trying to make their younger siblings do what they do!

Older siblings are always trying to make their younger siblings do what they do! Hey, now, not always (just sometimes). I don't think he wants Sam to be a slut persay, I just think he thinks Sam needs to enjoy life, and for Dean, that's how he enjoys life. I don't see Sam that way--they are two different people. Sam has made connections to others (Jess) and wanted that kind of life (marriage, family). Dean tried with Cassie and got hurt, so for him, it's just easier to "love 'em and leave 'em," whereas I think Sam has more morals (for lack of a better word) when it comes to that kind of thing. Dean is the guy you go out with and have a good time with, Sam is the one you settle down with and have a life with.

Mick is right, we don't ALWAYS want them to do the same. We just look out for them and share our wisdom that comes from having a few more years. And sometimes doing the same as we did is just the right thing. If only the younger ones would realize that

Yep... those few short years in age difference and experience make ALL the difference in the wisdom level... ( SARCASM! ) Remember, what's the right thing for one is not for the other, as Mick so elegantly pointed out with Sam and Dean. Dean needs to sleeze for whatever reason; Sam wants more. I personally think it is an older sibling looking for authentication. "If my little sibling does it this way, it means I was right." My sister was ALWAYS trying to be my parent, rather than my sister. I had two wonderful parents already... didn't need her in that job. My bro didn't do this to me though, only my sis. (And she STILL does it, despite the fact that I'm a fully-grown, capable woman!) (Can you tell it's a hot button topic for me? That's how bad she was / is? Course, now I get right back in her face and she's learning to back off. When I want her opinion, I ask. And I do.) I'm sure other eldest siblings don't behave like mine! On the show, it accounts for me believing that's why Sam rebels and wants different. Poor Dean is thrust into the role of being sometimes brother, sometimes dad and Sam doesn't know which he's going to get. John was, well, John. Yes, a dad... but no wife to counter the influence. NOW, I am NOT saying single parents and siblings are all like this, just how I see it in this case. This is why I'm devoted to my Sam... everyone told him he should do it their way and he had his own way but it wasn't good enough for them, despite the fact that there really was nothing wrong with it. Alas, Now I'm really late! Gotta fly!

Yep... those few short years in age difference and experience make ALL the difference in the wisdom level...I'm going to ignore the sarcasm and totally agree with you I never tried to be a second parent, being the big sister is fun enough On the show, it accounts for me believing that's why Sam rebels and wants different. Poor Dean is thrust into the role of being sometimes brother, sometimes dad and Sam doesn't know which he's going to get. John was, well, John. Well said! But I never saw Sam rebelling against Dean so much. He has his opinion and sticks to it, but as Dean tends to at least hear him out, I think they get better along. With John on the other hand .... well, you know.

See, I never tried to parent my sisters, either (I don't think my parents would have fallen for that). I do see my son trying to that with my daughter, which we quickly stop.
As for Sam and Dean, I also never really saw Sam rebelling against Dean. He rebelled against his father. I don't think Dean really knew what his place was with Sam--was he a brother or a father? John pretty much forced Dean to be the father, and then when Sam grew up and wanted a brother, he wasn't sure how to be that. Old habits die hard, and all that.
For Dean, I think Sam was always the protected one, the baby of the family (and Dean had to always look out for him, while no one looked out for Dean, thus his feelings of worthlessness). Dean was forced to grow up too soon, too fast, while Sam was allowed to be a child, and I think Dean may resent that. Sam tries hard to get Dean to see that he is worth something, but again, we come back to the old habits thing.

ok, now wait a minute... IF you say you don't parent your younger siblings... BUT then also say that you want them to do things and learn from you... What is THAT? You are BOTH going to "stand" there and tell me you NEVER told or suggested to a younger sibling what they should or should not do? After you answer, I am going to find your younger siblings and show them your statements!!! I don't think Sam's rebellion was directly against John or Dean... more the life. I don't see him as asking them to change... he wanted them to let HIM be different. He tells Dean this much in season one... Dean admits he doesn't want Sam to go... He has to learn to accept that Sam will... And to his credit, he does! (Good boy!) I'm still careful on judging John... he's portrayed as bad so often, but truth be told, Lots of parents have problems letting go and letting their children be who they are...
