Ok, so my friend is watching tonight with me. She's only seen one other episode. She likes it. I'll be sending my DVD's with her. But that's not the interesting thought... We were talking about how quick Sam and Dean are at lying. It then occurred to me. The boys are too hard on each other. They have spent their ENTIRE LIVES learning to lie and lie quickly. In MOST situations, it is their first line of defense. Lie. It is almost instinctual with them. SO, on BOTH their parts, as a defense mechanism, doesn't it make a certain amount of sense they would lie and withhold in order to protect? Yet of course, each is furious when the other lies to them. I think it may be conditioned in to them.

Oh, I agree. I noticed it even more in the rewatch of this one than the first time I saw it...the way Dean looks Sam right in the eye without blinking and tells him he doesn't remember hell; the way Sam kept bugging Dean to tell him about hell. Not only do I think it's because of how they've been raised, but because of how, I don't know how to say it, how close they are, like the lying thing means there is something they can keep just to themselves--not that I think the secrets they keep are healthy by any means, but that they're still their secrets. Does that make sense?

Interesting, I hadn't thought about it like this. It makes absolute sense.
Hmm, I just typed that they never lied to each other before S4 and that it shows how far they grew apart during the four months, but that's not true ... Sam kept his visions from Dean for a long time and Dean didn't tell him about what John told him. It's not exactly lying, but they already kept secrets from each other in the beginning.

That's exactly it Silke... withholding is a form of lying... They do it without even realizing it and always have. Hence they reason if I was their therapist, I'd need to point this out to them.

So we can stop blaming the boys ... it's all John's fault

Yep, which is the reason they need to bring John back--there's still so many things they could cover!
