So, my weird little journey is over. Thanks again to Silke and Mick, I hope you don't gag too much... At least I hope the end works for you. Also remember, you asked for Dean to hunt you...
~~ Part Three ~~
Sam fell over the edge of the loft. He fell and fell and fell. When his body finally slammed into the ground it shook. Dean felt his legs tremble from the impact. He watched his brother’s head bounce off the ground over and over again.
He felt the firmness of the floorboard beneath his boot as his foot tried to push the gas pedal even further down to the ground. He needed to go faster. Sam’s blood wept through the original bandage and seeped onto the seats of the Impala, flooding it.
Dean envisioned swimming through a sea of his brother’s blood, unable to reach him. Sam drifted further and further away, slipping from his grasp.
He shook off the image and refocused.
Checking his brother yet again, he saw his lips turning blue, but his eyes were open and his lips moved over and over again.
“Why did you let him out? Why? Why?”
Dean bolted up from the bed.
He had learned to shake off the nightmares of hell and fall back into some semblance of sleep, but not this new version. He knew what it meant. He showered and made his way back to the hospital. He couldn’t rest until Sam was out of danger.
He did feel somewhat better and there was definitely more spring in his stride as he made his way through the corridors. As he turned into Sam’s room though, the image hit him so hard, he fell back. He couldn’t believe his eyes and he slid along the door to gaze inside again. He needed confirmation.
He was completely stupefied.
Ruby hovered at Sam’s side. Her hands gently caressed his brother’s face and although he couldn’t make out her words, he watched as her lips whispered what must be words of endearment or encouragement.
No…
Had she really? She didn’t.
Every kid knew it. Every kid recognized it… She was playing with him. She was using her demon-sense to play him. Ruby knew Dean was in the hall. She was just whispering ‘olive-juice.’ She was bitch enough to do it.
She had to be.
His anger rose.
And then her face sank, and a tear strayed down her stolen cheek.
Dean’s heart clenched and he willed his body to cry out and stop her. Olive juice had been bad enough, but now…
Now, anyone walking by…
Anyone who didn’t know she was a demon…
Anyone who didn’t know they had no reason to trust her…
Anyone who didn’t know demons lie…
They would think it was genuine as she leaned over and forgetting about the breathing tube attempted to kiss his lips, but then settled for the gentlest of kisses to his cheek and her hands hovered slightly above his face.
Dean pulled back around the corner, completely lost in a sea of emotions. His chest heaved and his face hardened from concentration.
There was something so completely wrong about the whole situation. Demons had put his brother in that bed. Now a demon hovered over him? Pretended to love him? Did love him? Possibly?
He’d always promised the best for Sam, but this couldn’t be it. Jessica was the best. Not this abomination.
He pulled back further and willed the scene before him to become yet another nightmare. It was simply too much. He pinched his arm, willing himself to wake.
He couldn’t trust Ruby. Every fiber of his being told him she was still hiding something from them and couldn’t be fully trusted to make the right choices. Sam might be blind, but it was Dean’s job to remain dedicated to the doubt.
Sam did though. He trusted her… it, completely it seemed. Thus far, she’d given Sam no reason to doubt her. Dean had though. Sam couldn’t explain fully his faith in her, and yet if Dean were completely honest, he didn’t know if he could fully trust his brother’s judgment any longer either. It all added up to doubt and careful observation. Course, Castiel’s warnings didn’t hurt.
Seeing a demon show obvious affection for his brother was not what he had ever expected to observe. This went well beyond the sex Sam had admitted.
His head and heart spun.
His chin sank to his chest and he heaved in air to regain control of his nerves. He couldn’t leave her alone in the room with his brother. Taking one final deep breath, he squared his shoulders and strode confidently into the room. He made it only a few feet before hitting an invisible brick wall. She’d pulled a chair close to Sam’s bed and clutched his limp hand in hers.
She spoke softly. “I’m not leaving. I earned the right to be here when you were gone.”
It was the next words that had frozen his feet.
“Please let me stay.”
Every cell in his brain called out to him to throw her out, but he looked at Sam’s hand in hers. Before he could speak, she added.
“I tried to get to you before Alastair, but I couldn’t. I swear Dean. I know you don’t believe me… Sam never answered his phone.”
She was cut off by Bobby’s return. “It got crowded in here.”

Dean picked up the paper. “Bonnie Callorr brutally beaten to death by her husband. Now she’s come back to beat other husbands? Sounds like our kinda case.”
Bobby dropped a case of rounds to be loaded in front of Dean on the table. “Salt and burn. Nice and simple. Just like the good old days.” He grinned as he walked out of the hotel room to his car.
Sam shifted on the bed. “I can cover you. That way both of you can dig, get done twice as fast.”
“Ha!” Dean snorted. “You’re not allowed up yet.” He pointed
toward the open door, as if he disagreed. “Ask your nursemaid.”
“He’s right, Sam. It’s too soon.” Ruby said softly from the corner next to Sam’s bed.
Sam shook his head. “I don’t think I like you two playing nicely together. Go back to fighting.”
She brightened up ever so slightly. “If you insist…” With a hint of malicious gleam in her eye, she added. “We could probably work on our training…”
Dean was on his feet in a heartbeat and staring her down. “Or I could kill you and he could rest.”
Sam held out his hands. “Back off, both of you.” He looked at Dean. “She was kidding Dean.” He waited until the tension
seemed to have eased off. “Hey, Ruby, you know what I would appreciate?”
She took her glare off of Dean and turned to Sam. “Sure, what?”
“I’m hungry. How about some dinner?” He smiled, encouraging her.
She nodded. “I’ll be back soon.” She headed out the door.
“Hey!” Dean called after her. “Aren’t you going to ask him what he wants?”
She smiled. “I know what he wants.”
Dean looked back at his brother in annoyed disbelief and Sam nodded. “She always does. Beats me how she does it.”
Dean rolled his eyes and followed her out. He grabbed her arm, a bit roughly.
“WHAT!” She demanded.
He swallowed. He hadn’t intended to be this abrupt. “Listen… There’s no easy way to say this, so I’ll get right to it. You want me to believe you care about my brother…” He held up his hand as she moved to interrupt him. “I don’t think I’ll ever trust you. You have to understand something… All his life there’s been only one thing for me…”
“Keep Sam safe… I know.” She did break in this time.
“No, only the best.” He let his words sink in. “You put on a good act, but…”
“I’m not the best?” She said flatly.
“There’s no way you could ever prove it.” He wasn’t trying to hurt her just clear the air, but he felt compelled to add. “He doesn’t love you.”
“I know.”
They stared at each other, locked in silent battle over the man it seemed they both loved.
Bobby forced the truce. “Come on, ya idjit. We got bones to burn before Bonnie claims another victim.”
Dean nodded. “On it!”
He turned a confident face to confirm his power status with Ruby, then climbed into the car with Bobby.
