Sam Winchester was born on May 2nd, 1983 in Lawrence, Kansas. His parents are Mary and John Winchester and he has a four years older brother, Dean.
When Sam was six months old, his mother was killed in a fire in his nursery (on November 2nd, 1983). The official cause of the fire was faulty wiring, but the truth is that Mary was killed by a demon.
Sam was saved when his older brother ran outside with him while their father went back to attempt to rescue Mary, who was stuck on the ceiling and consumed by the flames that later engulfed the entire house.
After his mother's death, Sam's father took his children and began traveling through the country, hunting evil and training his sons to become hunters as himself.
For 20 years Sam lived with his father and older brother, moving every few months from town to town, never having a real home and always hunting.
Sam is quite different from his older brother. He is rational, sensitive and more concerned with a "normal life" than his brother. He rebelled against his father's attempts to raise him as a demon hunter and after finishing high school, Sam decides to go to college. He gets accepted at Stanford, receiving a full ride as he doesn't have enough money to pay for it himself, and after a huge argument with his father, Sam takes off alone, breaking contact with his family and not talking with his father for four years.
In Stanford Sam finally can live the normal life he always wanted. He meets a woman, Jessica Moore, and he falls in love with her. They move together after a while and have a happy relationship for 1 1/2 years.
Sam never tells her the truth about his family or the life he lived before college. He just wants a normal life and is preparing to go into Law School, he even considers asking Jessica to marry him, when one day his older brother shows up on his doorstep.
Their father has gone missing while being alone on a hunt and Dean asks Sam to help him looking for him. Sam agrees to go with Dean and look for their father, but only for a few days because of an upcoming interview for law school.
They can't find their father and Sam returns to his apartment, glad to be home. But his relief is short-lived as the Demon who has killed his mother strucks again, this time killing Jessica in the same way his mother died ... exactly 22 years later on November, 2nd 2005
Sam gets saved again from the fire by Dean who comes back at the last moment and drags his brother out of the apartment.
Having lost his "normal life" and the woman he loved, Sam joins his brother on a journey to find their missing father and get vengeance on the demon. While John Winchester is still missing, he occasionally contacts the brothers and orders them to go on certain hunts.
Together with his brother Sam fights mystical creatures such as the Woman in White, the Wendigo, Bloody Mary, shapeshifters and many more. During these hunts, Sam is starting to have visions that are somehow connected to the demon and once even displays telekinesis.
At the end of the first season Sam and Dean reunite with their father ... but their family time is short-lived. While escaping from a clash with the Demon, a truck crashes into their car, causing massive damage to Dean's Impala with the Winchesters inside and after some twists resulting in their father's death.
In the beginning of the second season, Sam takes a more active role in the hunting. He tells Dean that this is what their father would have wanted him to do and he feels guilty because he believes that his father died thinking Sam hated him.
During these hunts Sam finds out more about his "powers": He is immune to the power of mind control by another "special child" and he is also immune to a demonic virus.
Eventually he learns about the plans the demon has with him: Moments before his death his father has told Dean that the Demon wants to make Sam evil and use him and "the children like him" as soldiers in an upcoming war. Dean was told that if he could not save Sam, he would have to kill him.
Sam is shocked and is now convinced that he must save as many people as he can in order to change his destiny and he makes his brother promise to kill him before it is too late. But when Sam gets possessed by a demon and it seems that his evil side has taken control, Dean is uanble to kill him.

The most important person in Sam's life is his brother Dean. He looks up to him and unconsciously always depends on his older brother to take care of him and be there for him. Although different to Dean, he doesn't need to be at his brother's side for the rest of his lfe. In the beginning, he is still planning to get back to college, get on with his old, normal life ... without Dean.
He actually left Dean on two occasions since they started hunting together. In Season One he resists to follow his father's orders to go on a new hunt and splits with Dean. Leaving Dean in the middle of the night on an empty road, Sam wants to travel to L.A. to go after their father. But when he finds out his brother is in trouble, he comes back after him.
The second time Sam leaves when he learns about the secret their father told Dean shortly before his death ... that the demon plans for Sam to become evil. Again he leaves his brother behind, needing some time alone.

After Jessica's death Sam needs a long time before he starts to get closer with other women again. The first woman he finds himself attracted to, Lori Sorensen, a pastor's daughter Sam meets during one of their hunts, comes to soon ... only weeks after Jess' death Sam is not ready to get involved with someone else.
Months later he meets Sarah Blake, the daughter of an art gallery owner. She helps the brothers to destroy a cursed painting, risking her life in the process. Sam is clearly attracted to her, a feeling that is reciprocated, but because of his complicated life, they couldn't stay together.
The third time Sam gets close to someone else ends tragic. He falls in love with Madison, a woman who turns out to be a werewolf. His plan to save her fails and he is forced to kill her.

Sam's most valued possesion is a Dell Precision M65 laptop, which he uses to gather information for the hunts ... wether this laptop could be saved after the car crash at the end of Season One or needed to be replaced is unknown.
