Dean Winchester was born on 24th January 1979 in Lawrence, Kansas. His parents are Mary and John Winchester and he has a four years younger brother, Sam.
When Dean was four years old, his mother was killed in a fire in his brother’s nursery. The official cause of the fire was faulty wiring, but the truth is that Mary was killed by a demon.
On his fathers orders, he took his baby brother and ran out of the house. He has never really seen what has happened inside the nursery, only the flames coming out of the room. But from that day on, he followed his fathers orders, learning to fight demons and “watch out for Sammy”.
When he was about six or seven years old, his father taught him to shoot by using empty bottles for target practice. He hit every one of them.
When Dean was ten years old, he failed to save his brother from a Shtriga while being alone with him in a motel somewhere in Wisconsin. Their father appeared in time to save Sam, but Dean carried the guilt with him forever since.
He went on his first hunt with his father when he was 16 years old and kept hunting with him until John disappeared ten years later, occasionally taking a hunt on his own after John was convinced he was experienced enough.
During the two years Sam was in Stanford, Dean met a woman, Cassie Robinson. She was a student in Athens, Ohio, and the two had a relationship for a while. When Dean had to leave town, he shared the family secret with her ... Cassie was unable to handle the truth and she broke up with him.
Unlike his brother, Dean doesn’t feel any resentment against his father for raising them the way he did. In his eyes John did the only thing he could after their mother’s violent death. After hunting for so many years he seems to prefer that life over the possibility of a normal life.
Due to this life he is an exceptional shot, he has knowledge beyond the norm regarding the supernatural and he is a skilled fighter.
When his father disappears for a hunt for longer than usual, Dean went to see his brother Sam in Stanford after having no contact with him for almost two years. Together they go looking for their father, but after the search remains unfertile, he drives Sam back to Stanford ... despite his hope that Sam might stay with him so they could go hunting together again.
Just as he is about to drive away from his brother’s life, fate strikes again and Dean has to save his brother again from a fire ... the demon who has killed his mother has now taken the life of Sam’s girlfriend, Jessica, killing her the same way as Mary. And again it is Dean who pulls Sam into safety.
Due to this event Sam joins Dean again on his journey to find their missing father and to fight supernatural creatures. While John remains missing, he occasionally contacts the brothers and orders them to go on certain hunts. When he does, Dean follows his orders blindly, which leads to fights with his brother again and again.
After his reunion with his brother, Dean nearly died twice. The first time when he accidentally electrocuted himself while trying to kill a rawhead ... the doctors gave him only weeks to live. He was saved then by Sam who took him to see a faith healer. Dean was healed, but he still feels that he shouldn't have been allowed to live ... his recovery left another man dead as the faith healer wasn’t a real one, but was channeling a reaper.
A few months later, he almost died in a car crash that left the Impala badly damaged, Sam and John hurt and Dean in a coma. Once again he encountered a reaper who informed him that it was his time. This time it was John who saved Dean ... by making a deal with the demon and hence giving his life in exchange for Dean's. And again Dean is left with severe feelings of guilt over his survival.
He is also haunted by his father's last words to him ... John revealed to him that the demon plans to turn Sam evil and if Dean can not save him, he has to kill his brother.
The most important person in Dean’s life is his little brother. He practically raised him since he was four years old and he would die for him if necessary.
Dean is wanted for murder by the police ... murders that were in truth committed by a shapeshifter in St. Louis and an evil spirit in Baltimore. After the murders in St. Louis Dean was assumed dead by the police because of the death shapeshifter who had died while still having the form of Dean. Yet after his new arrest in Baltimore, the police is looking for him again ... as is the FBI.

Dean’s most special possession and his greatest love is his car, a black 1967 Chevy Impala, which has hidden weapons in the trunk, most of his possessions on the backseat and a box full of classic rock tapes in the glove compartment. When the car was badly damaged after an accident caused by the demon, he spent weeks rebuilding it until it looked as good as new.
Dean loves to call his brother "Sammy", much to Sam’s dislike.
When creating false identities, he prefers using the names of rock musicians, actors and fictional characters.
He seems to like to watch Oprah, though he refuses to admit it.
He drinks his coffee black and likes peanut M&M's.
He always wears a brass amulet on a long black cloth band necklace, that is quite important to him. (in an interview Ackles has claimed that it is an Egyptian protection amulet, but this has been yet to be proved in an episode).
He loves flirting with every good looking woman that walks by him.
