John E. Winchester was born in 1954. He was a US Marine, presumably until he met his wife, Mary, and settled down in Lawrence, Kansas with her. In Lawrence, he co-owned a garage with his friend Mike.
He is the father of Dean (born January 24th, 1979) and Sam (born May 2nd, 1983).
On November 2nd, 1983, John witnessed his wife’s death Mary during a fire in Sam’s nursery. Although the fire was claimed to be caused by faulty wiring, John knows that it was something else that killed his wife.
After learning about the supernatural from the Psychic Missouri Moseley, John dedicated his life to fight the evil and avenge his wife’s death while at the same time raising his two sons and training them to become hunters like himself.
Some time after Mary’s death, John met a hunter, Daniel Elkins, who taught him most of what he knows about hunting evil. He became John’s mentor, but after a fallout between the two they lost contact and never talked again until Elkin’s death.
He met other fellow hunters during the years, among them Bobby Singer, Caleb, Joshua and Jim Murphy. The latter he even entrusted to watch his boys when he couldn’t.
John had planned for both his sons to join him hunting when they became older, but his younger son Sam had other plans. After revealing that he didn’t want to live his life hunting and instead chose to go to College, John told him to never come back. He didn’t talk to Sam again for the next 4 years. He continued hunting together with his oldest son, Dean; when Dean became old and experienced enough, both would go on hunts alone from time to time.
Twenty two years after Mary's death, John disappears after finding a lead for the thing that had killed his wife. He leaves coordinates for his son to follow, sending him on the next hunt he had planned, but other than that he left no note to where he was going. He also changed his voicemail so that any calls for him from people who would seek his help would be directed to Dean.
When John receives a message from Dean that he and Sam are back in Lawrence and that the thing that killed Mary might be back in their old house, he follows them there, but he refuses to reveal his presence while staying with the Psychic Missouri Moseley.
After sending his sons on further hunts, John finally meets up with them in Chicago, Illinois, where once again they have a lead to discover the demon that killed Mary. When it turned out that it was a trap laid by Meg, a woman possessed by one of The Demon's children, John once again decides to split with his sons to protect them.
The next time John meets with Sam and Dean is after he learns of the death of his old mentor Daniel Elkins. Together they avenge his death by hunting the vampires responsible for his death and at the same time find the Cold, a gun that could kill anything. They now decided to go after the Demon together and kill it once and for all.
John gets possessed by the Demon in the process, but is strong enough to fight it for some time. He begs Sam to shoot him with the Colt, which would not only kill him, but also the Demon. Sam refuses to kill his father and only shoots him in the leg. The Demon leaves John’s body and escapes.
After another attack from the Demon, which brings all three Winchesters into hospital and leaves Dean in a coma, John makes a deal with the Demon to save his son. He delivers the Colt … and his life.
John Winchester's official time of death is 10:41 am.
His sons cremated John's body in a pyre, taking his US Marine dogtags to Mary's headstone so that the two of them could share something.
John is send to hell, but about a year later, when the Gate to Hell is opened, he is freed and his soul ascents into heaven … where he hopefully is reunited again with his beloved wife, Mary.
It is not known when exactly John found out about the plans the Demon has with Sam, but shortly before his death he reveals to Dean that he might have to kill his brother if he can’t save him.
John had been driving a black Truck, 2-door 1986 GMC Sierra Grande.
Since Mary’s death John kept a journal in which he writes down everything that seems important enough to him. To read his journal, click no this link and then go to the car and click on the book lying on the floor in the back of the seat:
