from cwtv.com:
Bracing themselves for the possibility of an apocalyptic war, Sam and Dean realize they have an enormous task of hunting down the hundreds of demons that escaped from the Devil's Gate.
With only a year left to live, Dean decides to live life to the fullest and exhibits a carefree attitude that troubles Sam, who is trying to find a loophole in the deal. Bobby tells the brothers about a sighting in Nebraska that turns out to be seven demons that are the actual manifestations of the Seven Deadly Sins.
Kim Manners directed the episode written by Eric Kripke.

So, as I'm rewatching this (yay!), I've been thinking about Dean and his whole attitude at the beginning of this season. I think he hasn't really realized what's going to await him in hell. He's just happy to have Sam back and one year to live with Sam definitely beats 30 years to live without him. So he's not worried about hell, he's just happy to have his brother back and probably is looking forward to not having to worry about anything anymore once the year is over. And you've all probably read all of this a long time ago, so just ignore me

Yes, it is a good perspective, and It hink you're right. I still didn't like Dean in this one, though. I get that he was trying to not thikn about it, but he still felt so out of character to me (which I'm guessing is what the writers wanted). Was he putting on the false bravado for Sam? for himself? Or did the writers just think it would be funny to have Dean be all about food and the ladies? He felt too much of a charicature (sp?) of himself. (someone help me with the spelling of that word! )

I felt the same way the first time around, Mick. But it made a lot more sense watching it now, after having seen how hard this whole "going to hell" thing really was on him in the later episodes.

That's good to know, Sil. I'll have to rewatch it when I get the DVDs.

I always chalked it up to the stages of grief... The first part of the season was some form of denial for Dean.
