I was looking at my flist on my lj-site and found this post by kradical about Martin Luther King's speech. He posted a link to youtube where you can listen to the full speech: www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbUtL_0vAJkHe also linked to another lj-site where popfiend shared his thoughts about this. What he has to say and also the following comments are not only interesting for americans, IMO. I thought I share this with you: popfiend.livejournal.com/1686240.html

It disturbs me to no end that people in the world I live in can judge another human by the color of their skin and if found "wanting" be treated differently.
Tis a sad, sad thing. We Americans aren't obviously alone in our intolerance, every country has it to some degree or another, but I wish we could lead the way.
I'll never understand it. I agree that we don't make enough "deal" about the day here. I tried to acknowledge it in all my classes.

I wish we could lead the way.
So do I, sometimes. When I listened to the speech, I thought, the US is the last remaining super power in the world. They could change things. No one is gonna care what the germans are thinking, so there isn't much we can do (the war in irak proved that).
But it's not really fair to wait for the US to change things. If just everyone would start with himself/herself, given the time, things could get better.
Unfortunately, that is easier said than done.

Well first, I hate that we're thought of as a superpower... but I might be in a minority here at home. Second, well said!

But you are, in a way. If there's trouble anywhere in the world, it's usually the US who comes there first ... it's not always good what they do there, but it's always them first. And they do a good job most of the time.

I'd be happy to let someone else step in... (well...)
It would be nice to worry about our own problems first... then the rest of the world... but I guess those days are long gone...

Maybe those days will come back. I'm hoping that one day the EU will be as strong as the US is today .... though that is still far, far away in the future. I don't think we will live to see it, but maybe two or three generations after us?

A truly interesting thought... It would be an interesting world to imagine.
When we have this discussion in school, it boils down to the damned American attitude of "I do what is best for me and only me." The almight (and incredibly weak at the moment) dollar drives all decisions in this country.
I think, with the many social democracies of Europe, it would be a distinctly interesting thing...
Finding the balance... that would be cool.
I look forward to the day when someone holds a mirror to the US...
And YES, despite it all, warts and all, I am proud to be an American... We aren't perfect in ANY WAY, but...
