Ok, so I ordered John's Journal and I'm having a REAL hard time with it... There's (IMO) a LOT of flaws with what's in the journal and what happened on the show.
Does anyone know if this has been addressed anywhere?
For example, the boys talk about having read the journal and knowing it very well...
OK.
Then why do they act surprised about the existence of Vampires when it's talked about in the journal?
And also, there's SO much about John's thoughts about the boys... WHICH I think is COOL to read, BUT I wouldn't expect that in the book and I would expect the boys to react to it.
I believe others have read it. Am I missing something? Thoughts?

I've read it too and had similar problems with it. I liked it because of the little information we got, like at what time Sam left for Standord or when Dean got the Impala.
What bothered me most was the part about christmas, where John says he's miles away from the boys, writing in his journal, whereas WE know Sam is at home, reading the journal (did he have two journals?)
The part about John writing about his feelings I also found strange. It didn't seem like him to do that. Although if he did, he might have ripped the pages out before leaving the journal for Dean, like he did with the pages about his third son (forgot his name *blush*).
Same with the vampires, I found it strange that Dean didn't remember Elkins when they spend so many of Sam's birthdays with him. Sam might have been too young, but Dean surely would remember him, wouldn't he?
There's a lot in it that doesn't really make sense. I don't know if it has been adressed anywhere. I know other fans have talked about it, but I haven't read anything from Kripke about it. It would make a great Convention question.
These mistakes are sad, really, because the Journal could have been such an amazing addition to the show.

I've never read it, but it is written by someone from the show (a writer or someone behind-the-scenes), or is it like the books--about the show but not necessarily canon?

Another pet peeve? Dean was old enough to recall time at The Roadhouse with Ellen too.
Overall, it raised so many questions, it became a big disappointment to me.
