Ok, so here's my new theory... As I was strolling through Sam / Dean pictures. (I think I'm under the influence since finding a Sam-lovers site.) When we see pictures of JA, he's always hot and sexy... When we see JP, he's always so "cute." I think this influences why Sam is an idiot always needing to be rescued by the heroic, brave, perfect Dean in fiction. I know... I sound bitter. I'm REALLY NOT a Dean-hater. I'm not. I'm just struggling to find fiction that doesn't include pathetic Sam and Dean-can do no wrong worship. Harumph... ignore me. I'm a bitter, tired old woman these days. (I'm not used to being in love with the less-desirable one. I think I prefer fighting for my man against all who want him! )

See, now even though Sam seems to be the one always in trouble, I've never thought of him as an idiot. It's always seem to me that they play up Sam's intelligence and make Dean look like the idiot. It's like Sam is the brains and Dean is the brawn, and I don't see why both can't be both smart and strong. Sam has had his moments of saving Dean, and Dean has had his moments of showing intelligence, but I feel like--esp with season 3--they made Dean look stupid and Sam look weak. Hopefully in season 4 that will change.
I also think alot of it has to do with who is writing the episode. It seems--to me, anyways--that certain writers see the boys certain ways and like to portray them as such, which is where sometimes inconsitencies (and I think I just massively mispelled that!) come in, IMO.

Ah see, Mick, I'm talking about fanfiction... NOT the writing on the show. Although I agree with you about the writing on the show, but I think it is fairly balanced. No one who truly watches the show only would consider Dean dumb. Their characters are too complex. They each get equal moments. I don't feel this way when I'm watching the show. I feel it when I'm reading fiction, which I have almost entirely stopped doing for this reason. I know we authors write because we want to see a certain story play out, but I really hate it when we manipulate the characters so grossly. That's what I feel is happening in fiction stories. Sam is made to be a sniveling weakling and the stories present a glowing, nearly perfect Dean. They lose perspective.

Oop, sorry Yor, I misread. ;D
Yeah, Ive had some problems with fanfic changing the characters as well (both Dean and Sam). I tend to avoid those like the plague. I have found some really good ones out there, and usually they are by the same authors.
That's why I've had a hard time coming up with anything for SPN--I don't feel like I have a good grasp on the characters (well, good enough to write), and I don't want to change them from what I see on the show.

Mick... If you have a good enough grasp to sense that others are wrong... YOURS IS FINE!

A bit late to the game, but here's what I think. I agree, there are a lot of fics where Sam and Dean are being written out of character. But there are some really good ones out there that describe the brothers spot on. You just need to find the right writers Which, I admit, isn't easy when it comes to SPN because there are so MANY! (I have read my share of really, really horrible fanfics since becoming an SPN addict) I'm guilty of always writing Sam as the one getting hurt and Dean wanting to look out for him, but never because I see Sam as an idiot or Dean as Mr. Perfect. It's simply - to me - because Sam's the little brother and big brothers look out for the little ones, hence, Dean has to save Sam and not the other way around. Dumb reason, I know, but I can't help it. I hope my Sam never came across as stupid because of that

Silke... You write as you LIVE! You are a classic big sister and write Dean that way... Of course, as a classic youngest sister, I defend my Sam! I think it's also why we youngest tend to rebel more! Still, I'm finding that even authors I once depend on are falling into this trap as well.

You know, I've always found the oldest vs youngest thing interesting (well, birth order in general). I know for a fact I have some classic oldest issues (for lack of a better term).
And Sil, you are an amazing writer!

A friend of mine did her master's work on birth order... It's fascinating stuff. I'm a classic youngest. I think it's interesting that oldest tend to 'hang' with youngest...

Well, her masters is in secondary education. Her thesis was on how birth order affects the classroom. But still cool! I wonder how many "oldest" go for Dean and how many of us "youngest" go for Sam? Think there's any connection???

Might be. Although, when I first watched the show, Sam was my favourite. It wasn't until Home (I think) that I fell for Dean (or rather Jensen, to be honest)

Interesting question, yor, although I like Dean because I am a Jensen fan (Jensen is what attracts me to his character). No offense to Jared, because I think he's a great actor and good looking, but there's something about Jensen. I am a classic "oldest."
