From cwtv.com:
Sam and Dean investigate the murders of several people by individuals who claim they were visited by an angel and were carrying out God's will.
After the brothers learn those murdered were actually guilty of secret crimes, Sam begins to believe this angel really does exist, but Dean stands firm on the fact a demon is behind the slayings - until he sees something even he can't explain.
Sera Gamble wrote the episode directed by Kim Manners.

I've just watched it again. The conversation at the end *sigh* Sam looks so young and vulnerable ... I love that scene.

Ok, since when does Dean carry a flask and all of a sudden offer a drink to Sam? Or was he testing Sam with Holy Water?

I think it totally fits that Dean would carry a flask with him ... and I highly doubt that there's holy water in it *g*
I'm not sure, but I think the flask was shown in another episode as well, but I can't remember in which one.

I don't see it. Dean doesn't drink on the job. It just seems like he's all about the alcohol this episode and it seemed to come out of nowhere...

Carrying a flask doesn't mean that he's getting drunk. I think, with the things he sees so often, having a drink after the more nastier things (like Sam admitting he just saw an angel ) would be normal.

Like I said, I think we saw it again (or before) at least once ... I just can't remember exactly (and I might be completely wrong *g*).
Also, they drink beer during research ... a lot. Not much different, is it?

I think it's different. It's research. I drink beer when I'm correcting tests, but not in the classroom. The only other flask I can remember is one Bobby offers... Then again... You're GERMAN!!! *giggle* I'll give up. It just always bugs me about this episode.

Hey, what's that supposed to mean? Not every German runs around with a flask!

Considering the subject matter they were dealing with in this episode, I can see why Dean would carry a flask with something stronger then beer in it. Remember the whole angels scene, where he tells Sam what their mom used to say to him when she tucked them in? And then when he asks Sam where the angels were when she died like she did? I think maybe the case brought up alot of feelings about his mother's death--stuff he probably still hasn't dealt with (given how he likes to just keep things in and all), and then seeing that pole got through that guy...I'd be drinking, too!
As for the flask itself, it's probably one of those things where the writers used it to fit the story, and then never thought about it again.
