I've been "talking" to our dear X recently, and I told her we might compile a list of "must see" episodes of SPN for her. I mean those that move the main mytharc forward. What do you think? Could we?
I think from the first season there are three, that are absolute must: Pilot, Home and Devil's Trap. Do you think there are more?
What about second and third season? And fourth now?

Ooh, that's tough. Do you think she might also need to see 'Salvation" to understand "Devil's Trap?" And maybe "Shadow" to understand Meg? It's tough to say which ones only move the main mytharc, because there are some that may have a little bit of the myharc in there.
Season 2, she would have to see "In My Time of Dying." Um, maybe the one with Gordon ("Hunted," I think)? Also, the one with Max (the names are escaping me right now ;D). I would also show her BUABS, and of course AHBL I & II. I'd have to personally recommend "What is..." only because I think it's one of the best ones they've ever done. I'll have to look at my DVD's later to see what else there was.
Season 3...um, I don't know. Probably the stuff with Ruby (bleh)--the season was so short, and if she really wants to get into the show, she would also have to know Dean's storyline as well.
I'll think on it some more.

Once she's reached Season 3, she'll hopefully be so hooked that she'll want to see everything For Season One I would also add "Hell House" and "Scarecrow" because they show some awesome brotherly dynamic. And maybe Asylum? And all the ones Mick mentioned. Season Two: Definitely the ones Mick suggested. And "Simon Said", because we meet more special children there.

I was watching through a couple of season 1 episodes last night (and I agree with Sil about "Scarecrow," esp after watching it again). I would also recommend "Faith," for a few reasons. First, what the Reverend says to Dean about God choosing him and him having "an important job to do" is all the more meaningful given what's going on this season. Then there's Sam, fighting to find a way to save his brother's life. In this one, he succeeds, where as he doesn't later on (I just think it's interesting). Plus, there's the reaper storyline, which may help a bit if she watches IMTOD.

Honestly, I think she just has to start watching the first few episodes... The pilot sets it up...
ok, I could skip Wendigo, but Dead in the Water is awesome... shows the hunt, even if not the mythology... Phantom Traveler gives family insight, Bloody Mary is awesome, etc.
I think people watch for three reasons... the characters, the alternate between humor and angst and the mythology... I don't know that the true mythology is needed to suck one in necessarily. X is a big fan of the relationship of the Adama's on BSG... that's also what drew me to the boys on SPN.
Course, you've been discussing it with her, so you know more. We can work on her next weekend.

Ooh, yes, I had forgotten about "Dead in the Water" (which is one of my favorites--bad me!). That's another good one. Truth is, there's little bit in all the episodes, that it's hard to pick out just a few.
Dang, I wish I could be there to help you convince her!

I got hooked up on Dean after the call to Daddy in "Home".
Dead In the Water and Bloody Mary were cringe-worthy for the Monster-of-the -Week factor for me. Phantom Traveller had some nice brotherly dynamic.
I think we would need to add Scarecrow for the brotherly stuff, right? This is the one where Sam left Dean, if I remember correctly, and he met Meg? Or did I mix something up?
