perhaps they weren't talking about it much. It's very likely.I can imagine that John never really talked with Sam about that night. I was probably Dean who told him what happened. And since for him it's just natural to protect and save his little brother, he never thought it important enough to mention that he carried him out. Home is one of my favourite episodes ever too

I think it seems like Dean just assumed Sam knew it... 'I take care of my little brother." I agree that the three probably did not talk about that night... Or as little as possible.

So, I randomly put in a disk tonight and lo and behold, HOME...
It is the first time I've watched it since "In the beginning"... WOW.
The final scene where Mary says, "I'm sorry." Of course makes sense, but it also casts all new light on the confidence she displays in fighting the other spirit in the house... She was a hunter after all. Course, made me wonder if she really was there. She could have kicked it's ass before...
Anyway, enjoyed it.

Who knows how ghosts tick ...
I think she really was there and - as a spirit - just didn't care what happened to the other people in her house. They weren't her family.

I don't see a hunter having that attitude... I can only believe she just couldn't figure out how to make it happen 'from beyond'.

That would assume that a hunter stays exactly the same after his/her death, which I don't think it's true. She's been a spirit for over twenty years, I don't think she's been thinking as a hunter anymore. She died as a mother, so I think that's what she'd be as a spirit.

Ooh, good thoughts, Sil. Makes sense considering what Tessa told Dean in IMTOD.

I always assumed Mary wasn't stuck there... Missouri said the house had been 'clean'. I assumed Mary came back to fight this. So her fighting instincts were intact? I never saw her as the kind of spirit Tessa reveals in IMTOD and Mary didn't go to hell... So her spirit wouldn't have been "warped". I assume the hunting spirit would have to stay... The fundemental part of a person which is driven to protect... It is sad to me to think of losing that. I'd prefer to think Mary saw it happening and was struggling to get back! ?

Missouri said the house had been 'clean'
But she also missed the spirit (or whatever it was) that attacked Sam.

Mary didn't go to hell... So her spirit wouldn't have been "warped".
But the spirit doesn't have to go to hell. Tessa said angry spirits are born when they can't move one they get stuck wherever they are...the loneliness, etc, drives them mad. When Dean told her he wouldn't go, she told him he was going to become what he hunts. At that time, he wasn't hell-bound (that we know of).
As far as Mary, that's a good question to ask Kripke. Was she there all along, hiding, waiting to see if the YED came back? I honestly have to wonder, if, at the time, the writers knew she was a hunter, or if that's something they came up with later on? Maybe she was tied to the house by something (they have shown that some spirits can remain when something they were tied to in life is still around, if that makes sense....I'm not sureh ow to say it)?
Either way, I think Kripke just wanted to give the viewers a kind of shocking ending, and what better way to do that then have the spirit of the boys' mother be there and save Sam and then apologize to him!
